Author
Kevin Prince, an inventor and US Patent Agent, has collected a unique set of patent art over five years as a patent researcher, taking note along the way of thoses patents having exceptional artwork. Now he's brought this collection to the public, showcasing masterfully illustrated inventions from over two centuries. You will be surprised at what some of these artists created--many with just a pen and paper--as far back as 1794 with Eli Whitney's Cotten Gin.
Kevin is an engineer (UC Berkeley, 1988), inventor, and co-founder of Inventor's Forum in 1990, a non-profit inventors assistance group in Orange County, CA. The holder of three patents himself (CD Snaps, Data Glove and Sleeve Saver), Kevin has had multiple successes in business, most notable selling his portable computer accessories business to a public company in 2000. He is also the past president of GridArt, which manufactured a unique line of art supplies that can "turn anyone into an artist." GridArt products have been featured on QVC, and have been sold in at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and various catalogs.
Through his IP firm QuickPatents, Inc., Kevin conducts dozens of patent searches per month, and prepares patent applications and formal patent drawings for his clients. With several engineers and patent draftsmen on-hand, Quick Patents excels at quickly and inexpensively writing your relatively simple mechanical and electrical utility patent applications and design patent applications.
Kevin resides in Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife Tami and three inventive children.

New inventions are described in patent documents, which usually have a dry written description and a number of black-and-white line-art drawings. Just about everyone involved with a patent is listed on the front cover--with one exception: the artist who created the patent drawings. In the US alone we now have over 200 years of patents - nearly 10 million documents--illustrating everything from the cotton gin to the iPod. Yet the artist is not mentioned anywhere in the patent record. They remain anonymous.
It seems that everyone is either an inventor or knows an inventor. We all appreciate the story behind a cool invention. That's why each card includes an amazing illustration and information about the invention, including the inventor's name, the patent title, the patent date, and the patent number.

This book is truly beautiful, and really does a fantastic job at depicting, what for many is a very dry subject, as art that can be appreciated and enjoyed by anyone.
The passion of the author is clear to see, which in my view often leads to producing something which feels a little like it is being force-fed, however he has masterfully crafted it with just the right balance of historical and factual information alongside the visually artistic aspects and chosen to focus on items of maximum interest to any audience and the result is that this is fascinating, entertaining and informative at the same time.
You will learn something without even meaning to!
I highly recommend this book without hesitation to anyone, it is impossible not to enjoy it.

This book is definitely a keeper! Kevin Prince has created a beautiful book made for hours of pleasurable browsing. This book showcases patent art going back in time to inventors we learned about in school, like Eli Whitney, all the way to modern times and patents on items we all remember, like the slinky. His personal observations about the art bring to glowing life what might otherwise have been thought of as a "dry" subject. Even those who have never sought or will never seek a patent will enjoy this trip through the history of patent art. It's a great gift, especially for the inventors among us. This is a book that will live on our coffee tables rather than being relegated to a bookshelf. Highly recommend!

I really enjoy this book and find it hard to put down. I am not personally familiar with patent law or anything else related to the field, but I do enjoy browsing art books. This unique combination of both is surprisingly fascinating.
